Most accountants tell you what happened last year. We work with business owners across Warwickshire and the Midlands who want someone in their corner telling them what to do about it now.

We have one rule at Bernard Rogers: you deal with one person, and that person knows your business. Not a different face every time you call. Not a junior putting your question to a senior. One contact, who picks up when you ring, who already knows the numbers, and who will tell you honestly what they think.

That is what advisory looks like here. Not a bolt-on. The whole point.

What we do together

Management accounts

We prepare your accounts monthly or quarterly so you can see exactly where you are, not where you were six months ago. We flag the things that need your attention before they become problems.

Cash flow forecasting

We model what your cash position looks like three, six and twelve months out. This is the information you need before you take on a new member of staff, make a capital investment, or say yes to a big contract.

Business planning and growth

Whether you are thinking about expansion, restructuring, or stepping back, we work through the numbers with you and help you build a plan that is grounded in what the business can actually support.

Tax efficiency

We look at your business structure, your drawings and your plans and make sure you are not paying more tax than you need to. This is forward planning, not year-end tidying up.

Due diligence and acquisitions

If you are buying a business, taking on a partner, or selling a stake, we will go through the financials in detail and tell you what we find. No surprises.

FD support

For businesses that need financial leadership without a full-time finance director, we act as a part-time FD. Monthly meetings, board-level input, and someone who understands the whole picture.

What this looks like in practice

Soma

Soma has been with Bernard Rogers for 25 years. When Robert stepped into the managing director role seven years ago, the transition involved four companies, a generational handover and a significant shift in tax exposure. We worked through succession planning, trust structures and the ongoing financial oversight that gave both Robert and his father confidence the business was in good hands.

Supporting a family business through leadership transition, tax planning and long-term succession

Robert had worked in the business for eight years before becoming Managing Director four years ago. When Rick stepped back, the handover required careful planning across finance, operations and ownership. We supported the transition by managing the practical and strategic financial changes needed to move leadership from father to son. This included reviewing shareholder structures, advising on shareholdings and options, and ensuring responsibilities, reporting and governance aligned with Robert's new role. Jo, their Client Manager, oversaw the process and ensured the transition was smooth, structured and fully understood.

Alongside the operational changes, we worked closely with the family on tax and succession planning. This included reviewing the wider group structure, considering inheritance and estate planning, and ensuring future tax efficiency for both the business and the family. The focus was on protecting the business, minimising risk and creating a clear plan for the future, while allowing Robert to step into leadership with confidence.

We produce Soma's annual accounts and manage payroll for their eight employees. Robert has an annual review meeting with Jo and communicates regularly by email whenever questions arise. When QuickBooks was introduced, Jo visited the business to provide hands-on training for Robert and his team.

Soma also operates as part of a wider group following the acquisition of another business twelve years ago, a process that we supported from a financial and structural perspective. Consistency is extremely important to Robert, and he values having a trusted adviser who understands both the history of the business and its future direction. As Soma Services continues under Robert's leadership, we remain a trusted partner providing stability, expertise and long-term guidance.

Navigating major industry challenges with proactive financial guidance

Steve first heard about us through his father, who runs a legal practice and valued the personalised, advisory-led service we offer. Adventure Sports initially approached us for management advice and deeper financial analysis to help them expand and move the business forward.

Brexit had an immediate and damaging impact on their corporate away-day business, with major clients such as Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin halting all activity. David worked closely with Steve to react quickly, reshape the business model and pivot towards public-facing activities. This required rapid decisions and significant investment, from updating their website and online booking systems to building all-year-round visitor shelters.

The challenges continued as they completed a major capital project — a new Go-Kart track — just weeks before the first Covid lockdown. During the pandemic, we supported the business through furlough, cashflow planning and financial modelling. When restrictions lifted, they had a record-breaking reopening year. Corporate clients later returned stronger than before.

Alongside strategic support, Lindsey, our Senior Accounts Assistant, works closely with their company secretary to manage day-to-day finances, visiting the office several times each quarter.

Adventure Sports see us as a proactive partner who knows their business inside out. Through periods of stability and crisis, they have trusted us to provide clarity, reassurance and financial leadership when it matters most. We are proud to continue supporting Adventure Sports in Warwickshire as they invest in the future.

Why our clients stay for many years

The average client relationship at Bernard Rogers is around seven years. That is not an accident. It is what happens when someone actually knows your business, calls you before the deadline rather than after, and gives you a straight answer when you ask for one.

We are not the cheapest option in Warwickshire. We are also not going to hand you to a different person every year and call it service. If that trade-off sounds right for your business, let us talk.

FAQs

Common questions about business advisory. Get in touch if there is anything else you would like to know.

How is business advisory different from standard accounting?

Standard accounting tells you what happened. Advisory tells you what to do about it. We work with you through the year, not just at year end, looking at performance, planning ahead and helping you make decisions with the full financial picture in front of you.

What size of business do you work with?

Mostly owner-managed businesses with between 1 and 50 employees. Some are sole traders growing quickly. Some are established SMEs with multiple directors. The common thread is that they want a proper relationship with someone who knows their numbers.

How often would we meet?

It depends on what you need. Some clients want monthly management accounts and a regular call. Others prefer quarterly meetings with ad hoc contact in between. We set this up together at the start and adjust it as the business changes.

What does it cost?

Advisory support is priced on a fixed monthly basis, agreed upfront. The cost depends on the scope of work — how often we meet, what we prepare and how involved we are. The easiest way to get a sense of fees is a short conversation with David.

We already have an accountant. How easy is it to switch?

Very straightforward. We handle the professional clearance, contact your existing accountant and make sure nothing falls through the gaps. Most clients tell us they wished they had switched sooner.
