David's Christmas Reflection 2025

As we reach the end of another year, I’ve been looking back at everything that has happened across Bernard Rogers & Co and the wider business world. It has been a year with no shortage of change, challenges and the occasional surprise, but also one filled with progress, good conversations and a few proud moments along the way.
Within the firm, we’ve continued to grow. We’ve welcomed new faces into the team, strengthened our specialist services and supported more clients across Warwickshire and beyond. We’ve helped businesses acquire new ventures, expand their operations, steady their cashflow and in some cases simply catch their breath. It has been a privilege to be part of those journeys.
We also reached Xero Platinum Partner status this year, which was a milestone we have been quietly working towards for some time. It reflects the blend of modern tools and human judgement that sits at the heart of how we work. Technology is useful, of course, but it is the conversations, the problem-solving and the long-standing relationships that make the real difference.
The accounting world, as always, kept us on our toes. IR35 remained as clear as mud. HMRC continued to push businesses towards digital record-keeping. Companies House introduced identity verification for directors. And then the Autumn Budget arrived - and it was dramatic. Rising taxes, frozen thresholds and tighter rules on dividends and property income mean many SMEs and contractors will feel the impact as we move into 2026. There were some positive measures for investment and growth, but it was a Budget that reminded us how important proper planning will be in the year ahead
Through it all, what has stood out to me this year is the resilience of small businesses. In a climate of rising costs, shifting rules and constant talk of economic headwinds, you have carried on building, improving and adapting. Many of you have taken bold decisions, asked difficult questions and pushed your businesses further than you thought possible a year ago. That deserves recognition.
As for us, we will continue doing what we do best: helping you navigate the numbers with clarity, calm and a bit of common sense. If 2025 has reminded me of anything, it is that good advice delivered by people who genuinely care still matters. AI can help speed things up, but it cannot replace the reassurance of a conversation with someone who understands your business inside out.
So, as the Christmas break approaches, I want to say thank you. Thank you for your trust, your honesty and the many cups of tea shared across meeting rooms and kitchen tables this year. It has been a pleasure working with you.
I hope you enjoy a restful Christmas and return in January with a fresh sense of possibility. Whatever 2026 brings - Budget changes included - we will be here, ready to help you tackle it.

Spring Statement 2026: what small businesses should be watching
he Spring Statement is due in March 2026 and, unlike the Autumn Budget, it is not usually the moment for major policy overhauls. Instead, it tends to act as a progress update: how the economy is performing, whether government finances are on track, and what adjustments may be needed as the year unfolds.
January planning: when announcements turn into action
January is often the time of year when last year’s policy announcements stop being theoretical and start impacting businesses and their day-to-day decisions. There has been no shortage of commentary in recent months around the Budget, tax changes and the wider economic backdrop. Much of that discussion has focused on what might happen. January is often the point when business owners start asking what actually needs to change in their business now.
